Its foundation is due to the establishment in this area of a group of families coming from San Juan de los Remedios who were looking for protection from the continuous attacks of corsairs and pirates to the coastal populations. Its town council held its first session in 1690 and in 1867 it achieved the title of city.<br><br>Today the site is marked by an obelisk surrounding a Tamarindo tree, the symbol of the town, very close to the church of the same name, which commemorates the first mass that took place and which made the creation of the town official. For some time the development of Santa Clara was centred around this place, today its centre is a little further south. By historical coincidence, an action of the battle of Santa Clara took place in this area, when the police station was attacked by the suicide platoon of column # 8 of the rebel army, commanded by Captain Roberto Rodriguez \"El Vaquerito\", who fell in combat.
