A small elevation located to the northeast of the city, which became notorious during the Battle of Santa Clara at the end of December 1958, as it first became a refuge for the soldiers of the Batista dictatorship and then a strategic rebel bastion to fight against the armoured train that tried to pass towards the east of the country as a reinforcement with abundant war supplies and 408 men. Its proximity to the railway line and the bravery of the 18 fighters of column # 8 were decisive in preventing the advance of the convoy and its immediate retreat towards the city, a moment that was propitious for its derailment and surrender in barely an hour and a half of combat. These actions were decisive for the capture of the city by "Che" and his guerrillas.
Nowadays, in addition to the monument that commemorates the armed action, the hill has become a natural viewpoint of the city and a recurring point for tourist and cultural activities. At the foot of the hill there is a bar and restaurant, in a ranchón that prepares the visitor for the moderate climb up several steps to the top.
Only 25 minutes from the city centre you can experience the history and the city view of the "Loma del Capiro".
