Very well located, 200 metres from the centre of the city, the hermitage began to be built on 12th August 1713 by Father "Conyedo", it was initially made of wood and palm leaves, it was founded in 1719 with the name of "Buen Viaje" and the image of the virgin of the same name, according to popular belief, stood out in its interior.

Father "Conyedo", with alms and the contribution of the people, began its reconstruction of masonry and roof tiles, which was completed in 1765, the father died before, so he did not see the completion without the tower and the altar, which were finished in 1790.

It was restored and converted into a Diocesan Sanctuary of the "Virgen de la Caridad" on the 8th of September 2012, in the presence of Vatican authorities, when it was blessed it was authorised to receive and fulfil promises from the faithful, only 3 can do so in Cuba, the sanctuary of "El Cobre" in Santiago de Cuba and another similar one in Havana.
